Innovative from the beginning

The history of the Fiat Group is a history of innovations. From the FIRE Fully Integrated Robotized Engine to Common Rail injection diesel powerplants, from the Multijet to the TetraFuel system, from devices to improve vehicle stability and their active and passive safety to the Natural Power range: just a few of the inventions developed by the Fiat Group’s sectors that were transformed into innovations capable of anticipating market demand.

At the time it was founded in 1899, Fiat was a far cry from the industrial giant it is today. In its first year of business, it built 24 cars, practically by hand. In 2006, its factories turned out two million automobiles, two million transmissions, almost three million engines, and thousands upon thousands of trucks, tractors and construction machines.

The Group has grown because of its ability to create innovative models, use advanced materials, develop high value-added components and systems, invent technologies for alternative fuels, and modernize its plants. And its brands have become household words around the world.

The Group is investing significant resources in developing new solutions in many areas: from automotive technology per se, to electronics, telematics, ICT and preventive safety.

Today, Fiat is a multinational, the largest manufacturer in Italy and one of Europe’s leading automakers. But first and foremost, it’s still what it’s always been: a fertile breeding-ground for new ideas.
